After a lengthy cruise across the Atlantic, the 82nd would arrive in Casablanca, French Morocco only to immediately gear up and march about 5 miles to Camp Don B. Passage. Following a short 2 night stay, the packed up their gear and boarded train cars called 40 & 8's. They were called 40 & 8's because they could hold 40 men or 8 horses, a real comfortable ride I'm sure. Their next stop, and final one for awhile, was Oujda, French Morocco where they set up camp just outside of the town. Needless to say, the 82nd didn't appreciate their new accommodations. They pitched their shelter halves for living quarters, drank water that was heavily chlorinated, and tried to enjoy the food that was quickly attacked by flies and blowing sand.

Training started immediately, usually lasting for 12 hours. At first they attempted to train during the day, but the 120 degree day's were unbearable. They remedied this by training during the night, leaving the troops to try and rest and sleep during the day; in the 120 degree heat. The 3rd Battalions of the 504PIR and 505PIR were to make a mass jump for Gen. Eisenhower and other high ranking officers and officials. 30 mph winds kicked up, which usually meant jumps were cancelled, but not this time. The pressure to perform for the dignitaries meant the show must go on. The mass jump was made, and many injuries were suffered. Most of the men were able to return to their duties, but some were injured so badly they were sent back to the States. Training would continue, with passes being handed out as well. Trips were made to Oujda, but the troops quickly found out there wasn't much to do there. The trip they would all at least be able to make once, was to the sea where they could get away from the heat and enjoy the cool waters of the Mediterranean. The training would come to an end by early July with the 82nd unaware that their first combat jump was soon approaching.

In April, the 82nd Airborne Division was informed that they would be shipping overseas. They left Fort Bragg on April 17, 1943 under orders that any insignia was to be taken off or not visible. To the troopers disgust, their pants were not to be bloused. Their beloved jump boots were to be covered by their trousers or regular infantry leggings.

Their troop train arrived at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts for a brief stay before heading to New York. The time at Camp Edwards was filled with lectures, inspections, and innoculations. The Division finally arrived at the New York Port of Embarkation on April 28th where they would board the numerous ships that would sail them across the Atlantic. Upon boarding the ship, any expectations of a luxurious trip went out the window.

The 29th would finally see the Division underway. Not knowing their destination or how long their trip would be, they tried to stay busy and keep themselves entertained. Movies were available, as well as troops participating in boxing and wrestling. Meals would be eaten while standing, and only twice a day. Showers were in short supply also, due to fresh water being in short supply. Their showers, when available, would be taken with salt water. Their trip across the Atlantic would take eleven days with the Division unsure of what would lie ahead.
